The author probably meant to suggest "a", but I actually don't agree. The Republican party has become conservative across the board. The Democratic party has become liberal across the board. In fact, I believe that most Americans are economically conservative, politically centrist, and socially liberal. I actually believe, therefore, that most Americans are centrist or libertarian - and they just aren't aware of it.

Both political parties are represented in all social classes. There are definite differences in the parties as shown in there positions on various political issues.
