The author probably meant to suggest "a", but I actually don't agree. The Republican party has become conservative across the board. The Democratic party has become liberal across the board. In fact, I believe that most Americans are economically conservative, politically centrist, and socially liberal. I actually believe, therefore, that most Americans are centrist or libertarian - and they just aren't aware of it.

A is your answer and is the reason why third parties don't survive long in US politics. This parties are usually just the fringes of the main parties. Both political parties are represented in all social classes. There are definite differences in the parties as shown in there positions on various political issues. There are many democracies that have many parties these are usually parliamentary govt like Britain and Canada. Each party has a section or special interest group that have a lot of pull in there respective parties but they are not the reason for that parties existence. It's just that each party shares a common goal with these groups.
