I recently bought a set of prismacolor 4-1 Markers before I knew there were other brands out there. And I wanted to know if I should look into getting Copics or Trias? What are the differences in the markers? which are more economical?

My son is insistant about the abilities of copic markers. I know that sometimes they are harder to find and a bit more expensive but the refills come out to be less and there are more colors and many other reasons- Prisma colors are excellent though too so I think that it would depend on your sources etc. Try putting your question in as a search because I've actually read an article comparing them on the net- sorry I can't guide you to it....

I know this question is oooooollllddddd but I still want to give my 2 cents since I have used Prismacolor, Copic, and trias.

For beginners there is nothing wrong with Prismacolor. They are cheaper compared to some of the other brands and much more available to those wanting to buy them (you can get some packs from Walmart and Office Max/Depot). Even if you are a professional Prismacolors are still good to use. They may not have the extensive color library that Copic have, but they still have an impressive selection and work wonderfully with other brands.

Copics are claimed to be one of the best out there, and when they first started coming out I would have to agree. With their multiple style and refillable/replaceable capabilities in addition to their VAST COLORS it's easy to see why. Although I do own plenty of them...I would have to say that nowadays with brands like Spectrum Noir and ShinHan they are not that special any more. Don't get me wrong they still have the best color selection out of any brand out there, however they are now being a bit overpriced while as the other two mentioned are a lot more affordable (and both being my preferred choice over Copic).

Trias are still relatively new to me, though I have grown quite fond of them with each use of them. Currently they are both the hardest to find and yet in some places where you can find them they are relatively cheap (DickBlick for example). They're triple nibs are a bit of a gimmick but I cannot deny that I have grown fond of having an ultra fine nib one some of my alcohol markers.

All in all, Prismas are a good starting point. They are the best to get familiar with how alcohol based markers work.
