This is no joke! Go to local zoo (if one available somewhere close), - and ask them for some manure from one of the big cats, - like lions, tigers etc. Just put a little around the garage area, - like every 8-10 feet, and the little critters will flee to the woods! This will also keep the deer out of your flowers and garden area! Of course if they are real pesky, you can put a little under the hood of car - don't put it on the engine (it makes it stink too bad for humans too!!)
Also there is "big cat" urine product available, -that you can mix with water and spray around the area, - (it hardly "smells" at all), - but the animals have better noses than we do!

No, I haven't had this happen. However; my oldest daughter had damage to her car's wiring from mice! She was living in Biloxi Mississippi at the time, it was about a year after Hurricane Katrina hit the area. There were still many empty lots with debris and overgrown vegetation near her apartment and the place where she worked. This was one of only two times she ever asked her dad and I to borrow money.....I'll never forget the call. "Mom, I need help. My car stopped running and I had to have it towed to the shop. The wiring in the engine needs to be replaced. Mom, a mouse ate my car!" (We used to read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" when she was young). We laughed and cried. It cost her a few hundred dollars to have it towed and repaired. The mechanic told her that he'd seen it before, and had seen it more often since 'the storm'. I do know that mice will chew the insulation off of wires to use in building their nests. I'm not sure if squirrels do the same or not.

Consider making them a little box that might be just as warm as the car engine (when it is off) and find out what they like to eat most. Place that in the box to entice them. Leave them treats there as you can.
I am not sure if I would want to just turn on my car though. Make plenty of noise with opening and shutting your hood at least once to give them a heads up to head out. That does not help the spark plugs though!
Good luck!

Sprinkle Red Cayenne pepper on the engine block. about a whole can for a couple days or so. it will get on their whiskers and what not, but won't be problematic for the car. Got rid of squirrels that way.

Wow, that is a great question! I have no experience with chipmunks, but we do have a lot of Grey squirrels around here. Try something that makes noise, like using string to tie pie tins around the trees to scare them off. Also, moth balls work to keep cats & squirrels away. They don't like the smell. Pie tins & moth balls were the savior of our garden this summer. Hope it helps!
