My monitor kicks on at first then a black and white scream comes on giving me so many seconds to choose either to start windows normally, or to find the last safe configuraton that works. I've tried both actually and both times the Windows screen will come on but when it gets ready to switch to my desktop, the screen goes blank and my keyboard stops working. What could this be and how can I fix it?

That is a boot problem. What is happening is that Windows is failing to load and taking the system down hard.

Fixboot might work and you might have to do a repair install of Windows. It could still be hardware related too. It could go down when it tries to load the driver and activate some type of hardware.

There just isn't enough info for me to tell you exactly what to do.

sounds like you have some boot issues.... search google for a boot disk creator for xp...... then start your computer with that disk and it should boot.... once you get into xp, run the fixboot utility from command prompt
