Ok, you all know how there is a little jug container in the motor area that is for anti freeze? I've been told before that so your car wont over heat you have to keep that a full level. But I have also been told that it doesn't matter if it's empty, because that is where the excess antifreeze goes. Which one is right? I don't want my car to break!

lol. I know the difference between the coolant and the windshield wiper fluid.
So it is absolutely necessary to keep that full (the level it indicates is full) right??

i own a repair shop, and some body told you wrong on that one,the tank needs to be kept at the full when hot level on it,,what it does when the vehicle needs coolant it will be draw-ed in the radiator from the tank, and when it has to much it will send it back the the tank,if its low and cant get no coolant it will cause it to over heat on you ,and do some damage to it,,always keep it at the full when hot level but do it when the engine is hot,i do this for a living good luck with it,i hope this help,s

There is a full mark on the bottle itself. It's there for a reason. To take antifreeze out say if some leaks out and replaces the missing fluid. If too much pressure builds up in the cooling system the radiator cap is designed to close and open to release this pressure, and the fluid would then go into the bottle. If you fill the bottle to the top. you won't leave the room it needs and the bottle will over flow.
So just fill it to the mark that says cold,if the engine is cold, or hot if the engine is hot and you'll be OK. Make sure you put the fluid in the right bottle. They are now for some reason making green washer fluid. Don't know whose bright idea that was.

First make sure you know the difference between the jug for radiator/motor coolant and the jug for windshield washer fluid. Maybe you need a professional to check your fluids, but generally even at it lowest the "jug" for coolant should have some in it and still have room for more when the motor heats up. The proper mix of coolant is also important, not only from avoiding freezing, but many coolant aid in reducing evaporation and from keeping the car motor to hot.

That is the coolant overflow tank. It needs to be kept at the full level. It usually has two levels marked it. One for when the engine is hot and one for cold. If left empty air will be sucked into the cooling system as the engine cools down and could cause restrictions to the coolant flow. It also indicates that you may be losing coolant so check for leaks if the level in the "jug" goes down very quickly. Bottom line is, keep coolant in the "jug".

It really depends on the vehicle if it is an overflow or a surge tank. Either way if it continuosly low have a pro pressure test your cooling system to determine the cause of the coolant loss. If it is just fluctuating between low and full don't be concerned. Also if it is an overflow and NOT a surge tank it will not be the cause of overheating. The overheating will be from loss of coolant in the radiator, but then again if the cooling system is NOT sealed it will not "pull" from overflow tank. Surge tank on the other hand are an integral part of the cooling system, you can identify these usually by the radiator not having it's own cap and refilling occurs at the platic tank. Hope this helps.

If you look real close it has a name on it, like coolant level, or wiper fluid. Keep the wiper fluid full and the coolant fluid half full or inbetween the lines :)
you can't go wrong if you keep them both half full,
if you fill up the coolant overflow tank, if will overflow and make a mess, but wont hurt your engine. However, if you let it go empty it can cause your engine to over heat.

Look at it closely and you will find that there are lines on the side that say "HOT" and "COLD". These are the levels to keep it, and it should be near those lines when checking at the corresponding condition.
Heat expands - therefore the "HOT" level is higher than the "COLD". When the engine cools off, the "excess"is drawn back into the engine, as "COLD" contracts.
Maintain the level SOMEWHERE in the middle range and you and your car will be fine.
Good Luck

the mark on the rad. over flow jug is where you should keep it filed with 50/50 blend of antifreze and if the eng. is cold remove the cap and make sure the rad. is full also. the jug catches heated fluid and then it also makes up the loss in the rad.

the anit-freeze go into the radiator. it is good to have some water in that little jug but not to the top because if tha moter need water it will get it out of there and if it has to much it will put it in there.
