A checkmate is when you can get your opponent's king your next move and there is nothing he can do to prevent it. A stalemate is when you or your opponent cannot make another move without putting himself in check but at the moment is not in check.

A checkmate is when you make it so the opponents king cannot move out of check, meaning victory for you.

A stalemate is when neither king can be put in to check or if you have captured all their pieces and make it so that your opponents king cannot move without going into check, resulting in a draw.

As he said, Checkmate is where you can win your next move. Stalemate is actually a draw, because your opponent cannot make a legal move without moving into check, which is illegal.

check mate is when one person has the king in check and they are unable to get out of check. the person wins. stalemate is a tie. both people get down to a certian number of pieces and the game becomes impossible for either side to win. but that is a lot more rare.
