My doctor told me that my uterus was high and that he wanted to do an ultrasound. (He did not think he heard 2 heartbeats) It turned out only to be one baby. I was so nervous before that ultrasound!

Yes... with my last pregnancy the dr. thought he heard two heart beats and all external uterus measurements were large. multiple births are very common in my family with several sets of twins and triplets, one set of quads (no fertility drugs) ... I had an ultrasoud and was just carrying one baby...

Dr's are making a best guess most of the time... because she thinks she heard 2 heart beats and because of other indicators she is doing the right thing by ordering an ultrasound to confirm her suspicion that there may be two babies...

Having twins isn't the end of the world and if it turns out it's only one you know that too...

I had my 1st ultrasound at 9 weeks and the dr could see it was only one baby. I have gone to my monthly dr appt where she have measured my belly and it has been normal. But last month, I went for my 5 month appt and she said my belly was measuring big, so I had another ultrasound and I'm just having a big baby girl. But who knowa, maybe you'll have twins, how great is that! double happiness, congratulations !!

I can't say that this had happened to me but if they can hear to heart beats you might have twins. Didn't you have an ultrasound already? should have had one early on between 5-8 to check dating ? if you did and they only saw one baby then there's only one baby if you haven't had one you could have two babies I just found out this week that I am having fraternal twins.
good luck
