Conservatism isn't about religion at all....in fact, the religious zealots who are causing all the havoc aren't even conservative...they are very radical, actually.

Fanaticism is not intrinsically linked to religion.
Religion - generally speaking - is not in favor of change, so tends to be conservative. So - speaking in a political sense - it will be easier for a conservative party to get support from religious leaders and their followers.
Are there still commies around? Or is that a swipe at not so conservative parties?
I'm not a US citizen, but keep wondering about the fanaticism with which republicans and democrats keep disqualifying each other. Is dividing the nation patriotic?

Ironically, I think that true Conservatives and true liberals are probably closer on the religion perspective than everyone else in the so-called "middle."
You would probably consider me a "religious fanatic," yet, I don't believe my rights come from the Bible, they come from the US Constitution...
What I think has happened is that modern technological advances have vastly outpaced the law and ethics realm, and that this has caused the apparent "morality war."
You should probably recognize that regardless of how you feel about religion, our country has had a Judeo-Christian set of ethics for its entire history...
Some of the mores that are being challenged now, would never have been foreseen, even by the least religious of our fore-fathers, Thomas Jefferson...
The legislature is the appropriate entity to solve this dilemma for the US, and I am certain it will...

Very good Question indeed.

I'm conservative (pro-gun) on some things, liberal (pro-choice) in others. Last went to church several years ago.
If you keep trying to classify people by politics, you're going to waste a lot of your time running in circles. Most Americans are actually moderates, and feel a little uncomfortable with both the far left and the far right.
That's why only about half of those old enough to vote actually register, and of those registered only about half show up to vote.
Which means we are governed by a President chosen by only about 25% of the voting-age population.

So, are you saying that Al Qaeda is actually a constituent group of the GOP? Interesting take.
I think fanaticism shows itself when people are harmed in the name of religion (efforts for self-defense or defense of faith not included in this discussion).
So claims from 'whoever' that America has more to fear from religious 'fanaticism' from the Christian faithful is definitely congruent with the anti-religion stance of most communists. Religion and faith are not the problem in the USA, it is the LACK of faith and morals that continues to cloud our judgement and sink our ship.
