Truly amazing. Also, when asked what the outside world can do for them, they said to pray... Nothing else, but to pray. Maybe if we learned from their type of forgiveness, we wouldn't have the violence in America that we have now.

And for the person who posted AFTER this post, show some respect. Military is NOT for everybody. Respect their decision to believe military is wrong. I was in the military and will NEVER use it against them.

I can. By helping this widow, they are helping themselves. Someone else noted that the Amish do not serve in the military. It's true. They also do not collect Social Security or any other kind of government assistance.

During WWII most farmers were exempt from the draft because we needed the food. The Amish did their part during that war by continuing to raise food for the nation. This was in accordance with their religious beliefs AND a national necessity.

There are actually some regulations in the military system which require that true pacifists be either exempt from military service or be assigned to non-combat roles. This does not apply to eleventh hour converts, but to those who have demonstrated their religious beliefs in the way they live and worship. Since there are always a lot of non-combat roles in war, this country doesn't force the issue.

to the responder "The Amish have an honorable belief system. However, they will not serve in the U.S. Military. They will not take up arms to defend the country that protects their rights to be pacifists."

....I was wondering: was the U.S. miliary (USAF) set up first or the Amish peoples in our country? Were they here after or before our country was setup? Does the answer to that question make them immune to drafts, etc?

that's great. that woman had no idea her husband was like that and she is suffering more then any - she's not only suddenly without a husband and three kids to raise on her own, she has to live with the fact that this was her husband, and she has to help her children live with the fact that this was their father. the families of the Amish children that were killed, everyone feels sorry for them - as we should, but this woman, who knows what kind of hate she has already gotten from others, and likely the authorities weren't particularly nice to her because they needed to find out what she knew. poor woman.

Isn't that incredible? A huge act of compassion and kindness born from such hideous violence. If the "world" were to face all evil with such dignity and grace it would be a far, far better world to live in. Violence begets violence....love begets love...the only real way to defeat evil is with its opposite.
