sorry i think i used the wrong term, can u isolate virus from blood for example and directly perform tests eg. PCR?

umm... because they can't...
Viruses are dependent upon host cells to live and reproduce... you can't just put them on an agar plate like bacteria

Actually, I don't know the answer; I just want to clear up any confusion that might go with the first answer. By "culturing" viruses, it is assumed that they are plated (or "flasked") with the cells they need to produce more viruses. The virus particles are then separated from the cells and cell debris later by using centrifugation techniques.
