I have a compaq v2000 computer. It is over 1.5 years old, and I didn't get the extended warranty so it is out of warranty. My computer suddenly and without warning turned off after normal functioning. The only way to get it to turn back on is to take out the battery, hold the power button down for a few seconds, put the battery back in, and then push the power button again. The startup either begins with lights turning on and then turns off, or it boots all the way and then eventually, and randomly, turns off.

This same thing happened to me in January. It was still under warranty and compaq replaced the motherboard. This leads me to believe it is the same issue again.

Should I spend the money on getting it fixed, or even spend the money to find out for sure what is wrong? (Geek Squad said it would cost $200 to figure out what was wrong with it)

Send it back to Compaq and let them put a new motherboard in it. Once you get it fixed, sell it and use that money to buy a new (Toshiba) laptop.

Or just sell it for parts on eBay (describe the problem in the auction ad) and get what you can for it. You'd be surprised how many people will actually bid for a computer they think they can easily repair themselves.

Hi,

if your notebook is shutting off randomly you might like to check the following:
1. If the unit is generating excessive heat on the lower part, particularly where the power adapter connects.
2. If the AC power adapter is working fine.
3. If the unit works fine on battery for at least 90 minutes.

Once you figure out the answers to the above questions, you may like to discuss the same with our experts at http://www.maincorporated.in/

Any number of things could be wrong but the motherboard is a strong candidate.
Laptop motherboard/cpu components are hard to find in the market, but if you do, it may work out cheaper. The motherboard may not be conking out on its own repeatedly. You should have a look at the power supply too.

Nowadays you can buy a decent computer for $350. Did you have the powersupply checked? Probably easier and cheaper in the long run to just trash it. Keep the harddrive and put it in your new one to use as a second drive, if you decide to get a new one.

I never liked Compaq
