I've been saying this for awhile. I always thought it was a "cowboy's " greeting of "how are you?" or "how do you do". I've said it to others and they said " howdy back at ya!", so now I feel like it has more of a meaning. So what is it? So curious.

Howdy is an expression of greeting, as in the phrase, "how do? An old phrase at that. Also it can mean "midwife" but is spelled howdie. Hope this answered your question.

You are right. Howdy is still as a greet in Texas, Louisianna and states down south. It is a more formal greeting to them as opposed to using Hello or what's up.

Howdy means "hi" and the people are saying, "hi" back to you.

It's way to say hello. It's short for "how do you do?" which in that dialect usually comes out "how dee do?"...which has become "howdy"

I suspect (but don't know for sure) that it's a shortened form of "How do you do?"
