This rug is about 5 years old and I cannot live with in any longer. There have been no spills or pet accidents, it just has a really strong odor. I hate to have to get rid of it, but have no idea how to deal with the smell.

I'd start by giving it a thorough hoovering (underneath too) then a good airing outside preferably hanging over a washing line so the air can go thru it. Separate the carpet fibres with your fingers (wear gloves!) and then give it a good shake.
If that does not work maybe consider dry cleaning (although I have often found that leaves its own unpleasant odour). There are also cleaners who do only carpets. I have never used them but I have been told their prices can be quite high.
Pure wool does sometimes have its own particular smell which you will not get rid of...only time will do that.
Good luck getting it sorted.

Hmmm - must be the lanolin in the wool - what a pong! I took my area rug to the car wash and hung it where you hang the car mats...blasted it good. Wouldn't recommend this for wool, tho, it would probably shrink. Try calling a carpet store...a specialist if you have one...maybe someone who sells Turkish rugs, they should know.

Try putting it in the sun and also spraying it with Febreze.
Good luck.

I'd try calling the dry cleaners.
