Whilst it must be horrendous to live with that loss and what must appear to be in-justice on a personal level the law has to take a wider view.
In this example the person who as a result of Negligence, or recklessness is less blame worthy in the eyes of the law than someone who commits a criminal act with the desire and specific intention to do so.
In Criminal law the defendant who is found more culpable (blameworthy) will in most cases be dealt with more severely than those defendants who make a dreadful mistake.

you are so right. We can kill someone and get off lightly. We have the laws, but lots of these things get worked out when the lawyers get together. Sweet.
On the other what about these corporation and flimflammers that lose a person's life savings and leave them destitute. Then they get what community service and a few months in a federal pen where they can play tennis. Puhlease. Any wonder that we're beginning to circle the drain in this country.
Does nobody except you aand me see a problem with this?

It is a misalignment of values.
My father-in-law was killed by a drunk driver. The driver got 10 days in jail. He moved all of his assets into an Indian trust so that they could not be touched. My Mother-in -law not only lost her husband but her income and her house and no compensation from the perpetrator. Sometimes life sucks. But not always. Thank God she had family, she now lives with us.

Because it's a Godless society. Look at the way the needy elderly and children are treated. Look at the way the folks were treated because of Hurricane Katrina. SOME people just don't care and live each day looking the other way and don't get involved. So it goes on and on....

white collar crime is more high profile as there are fewer cases. i don't think its just in law, but generally that people regard money more than life itself
