Do you think they will try to be more efficient (car pooling or public transit, buying hybrid cars), or do you think we'll start seeing more Hummers and F650 Superkrews on the road?

Easy on the conspiracy theories and political polarization; I'm just trying to get an opinion.

I think that the American public, in general, is quick to forget some things. My guess is that people will start gravitating towards the "convenience" of SUVs and large cars with lower gas mileage. However, if hybrids become cheaper and have similar performance to non-hybrid cars, I could see them growing more popular - gas prices will never again be as low as they were 10 years ago.

as the general public seem to have attention span less than a goldfish I think we'll see more big engined vehicles until the next price hike when they will make an attempt to dump them or moan about price of gas. (I have no sympathy for these people) I guess the GM/Ford layoffs dont mean much unless you were one of the people laid off.
General trend is to smaller vehicles though, there has been a surplus of full sized trucks for last 6 yrs. Probably why there are so many tax breaks for businesses who buy oversized vehicles (and then put charges up to cover their new costs, hairdressers in Hummers, really need that thing to carry scissors)

I sold my Ford F250 Diesel 4x4 and bought a Ford Focus because of the rising gas prices several months ago. Now that I have the little go-kart (as we call it), I love spending $20.00 instead of $60.00 a week filling the tank! I'm not going to go back to a gas guzzler now that the gas prices are dropping. Not until I win the lottery, anyway.

I think most people will react by staying with the status quo and sticking with gas only vehicles. If gas prices take off again then more consumers will look at the hybrid option seriously.

They are doing the same thing. Gas prices dropping is only temporary thing. I don't think it will go below $2 a gallon average.
