The problem to trying to take route 66 is that much of it is no longer there or has been replaced by freeway. You would have to plot it out on a set of maps to get as close as possible. I have been to both ends of route 66 where the signs say start and end in Chicago and Los Angeles but it would be nice to drive the entire route.

Having driven 66 I know that it can be difficult to find the original route. Best way to plan is to buy one of the many books available on the Mother Road. See Amazon.com

since all but a few miles of route 66 no longer exists i would say find an alternate and follow that

try the east to west , she's the best , you start in the cold and slowly , miles after miles you can feel the climate getting warmer as you approach California , absolutely unmissable.
other than that i don't know as I've never been in the USA
