22 = -2 - 13a add 2 to both sides of the equation
22 + 2 = -2 + 2 -13a
24 = -13a divide both sides by -13 to get a by itself
24/-13 = -13a/-13
-24/13 = a

22 = -2-13a and you are trying to find the value of a. So you have to isolate a on one side of the equation. Whatever you do to the right side of the equal side, you also do the same thing on the left side to maintain the equality.
22 = -2-13a let's add 2 to both sides to get rid of the -2 on the right side...
22+2 = -2+2-13a
becomes
24 = -13a
now, let's divide both sides by -13
(24/-13) = a
or
a = -24/13
