Sore throats aren't usually a sign of serious illness, but knowing that doesn't make them any easier to bear. The best way to get rid of the scratchy, itchy, or dry feeling in your throat is to drink a steady stream of fluids. Water is most important, but soothing concoctions like honey cayenne tea, garlic broth and chamomile tea have beneficial ingredients that ease the pain and help the soreness fade more quickly. Throat spray and lozenges work well for pain relief, and steam treatments are a good way to treat the irritation and help you relax so you can get a good night's sleep. There are some nice herbal teas--caffeine free --on the market that really help soothe throats. Look for the ones with slippery elm as the main ingredient. The one I am currently using is Throat Comfort Tea by Yogi teas, but I've also used Throat Coat.

You might have allergies - the itching could be caused by drainage from your sinuses, especially if it's just "scratchy" and not sore. I use an inhalent for my allergies (Astelin), but it's a prescription. It works great, but I don't know if you're interested in medicine or a more natural remedy. Taking a hot, steamy shower (breathing in through your nose as much as possible) will help clear your sinuses.

Drink hot soothing tea with honey. Oh I use sauerkraut and jalapenos, but don't you do it. Ah what the hell, give it a try, see if you like it, see if it makes your throat all better.
Me, I need to find a way to get rid of a scratchy boat. I tried to sink it, but our town has a law against sinking boats and I got cited.

My momma used to make me gargle (don't swallow or you'll get sick) with warm salt water. Put about two teaspoons of salt in a glass of water and mix it up... then gargle until it is all gone. It tastes...well, salty... but it draws the infection out of your throat. Then, make sure your neck is covered up when you go outside and keep it warm... Anything with sugar (including honey) is actually going to "feed" the infection that is starting in your throat. Also stay away from milk products as they tend to make you all phlegmy... ick..and the natural sugar that is in milk is going to help the infection grow.
