Richard Rahl, OK he was the first that popped into my head, but really all of the characters in Terry Goodkind's sword of truth books are brilliant. The first in the series is called 'wizard's first rule', if you're interested.
Also, just finished reading 'The three stigmata of Palmer Eldritch' by Philip K Dick, really liked the idea of Palmer Eldritch, complicated character
