To straighten/support something- braces on the teeth straighten teeth. Braces for a spine can help straighten a spine. Braces on the legs can provide support. Braces on the neck hold it steady and support the head.

I guess it depends on what kind of braces you are talking about. If you mean on the teeth I would assume because they want straighter teeth, if you mean on their legs I would assume because they want straighter legs or a straighter back. Are you noticing the pattern...wearing braces causes straightening.
