Why should the sporting events be singled out for this purpose? After a while sports enthusiasts would feel `hard done by` and question why it had to be them instead of something else. Poverty cannot be dealt with by generous individuals, nor should it have to be. It is time the government took a direct stance on this issue and made it a governmental duty to rid the nation of poverty. If we can afford to take part in other peoples` wars then we can afford to look after our own. If the total cash collected from all over the country from parking fines were to be re-directed for poverty, it would not actually cost the tax payers anything at all!

No...because the money directed at sporting events comes from people's own pockets. They would not take that same amount of money out of their pockets to combat poverty. I mean, most people will pay $200 for tickets to something, but won't donate $200 to anything.

No, unfortunately poverty ridiculously enough is one of the few things that if you throw money at it, it does not go away.
Most of the money that is given to relieve poverty finds its way into linning other peoples pockets. For some it is a full time well paid job collecting and organising charity funding.
What is needed is proper fair trade and educatio, that is both home and abroad.
Anyway you don't need a lot of money for sport just facilities. it sthe business of sport that takes the money and a lot of the pleasure out of it.
Well that is my view

Only if it was used to combat poverty in my own country until everyone in my country who wanted to be helped was helped and then it went to other countries.

probably not, considering most professional athletes already commit crimes despite the fact that they make millions of dollars a year. Just imagine what they would do if you took that away from them...
