After the Blair witch project came out, a few months later I was watching the news. According to the news the Blair witch project was just a hoax. It was 3 teenagers having fun and trying to pull one over on us.

The Blair Witch Project is an interesting film study, you can call it an indie film with a difference using a more documentary style to tell a good story that fool persons like yourself and many others in believing it is real.

Obviously not real, but a good underground marketing campaign really gave it a boost.
It would be interesting to see it now when there is no hype and actually wonder if it is real, instead of when we saw it when it came out and knew it wasnt.
A decent flick and a good premise, just too much hype that took away from some of the appeal.
People say it is a hoax. Not really, it is just a movie. Movies rely on the suspension of disbelief, if the rumours help it out and make for a better experience then go for it.

If you think about it is was a genius idea for a movie. It took very little money to make it. Any Joe with a camera could do it. Then it was marked as the true story, creating a very large hype. People love to believe what they are seeing is "real". Then it turned in the big bucks. If people new it was just a movie they never would have went to see it.

When it first came out, when I saw it, there were rumors flying about that it was real. Because people thought it was real it litterally made them sick. Then right before it went out of theaters, the actors who were in it came out of hiding and admitted that it was just a really good improvisation. So no, it's not real. All three people who played in it are still alive and well, and living really well off the royalties.

No, it's "reel", not "real".
Its only a movie.
It is based on the Bell Witch (see link).

Nah, it's fake. They released some books about "the real event" to try and make it look more real, but no, it's fake.

Technically it's real, in the same way Indiana Jones is real or the way Goodfellas is real.
