It's safe to sleep with a tampon in given that you are sleeping less than 8 hours. You should never leave a tampon in for longer than 8 hours because of increased risks of getting toxic shock syndrome. So, if you are sleeping for less than 8 hours a night, you're okay. If not, you might want to use pads or invest in a reusable menstrual cup. Those do not have the same risks as tampons.

I am a huge fan of tampons. During the day. While I keep my medicine cabinet stocked with tampons, I find that pads are best at night. (in my personal opinion). It's not unsafe to use tampons, as you can use someo up to 8 hours. Make sure you read the labels on the boxes. They will let you know. The correct ones to use depend on what kind of flow you have.

Neither, I use a menstrual cup, they are the only safe internal option, can be left in for up to 12 hours without any leaking or health risks, can be left in at night, can be used when not on your period, used for swimming, and don't contribute to heavy flow or menstrual cramps as tampons do. Specifically I use a Mooncup – http://www.mooncup.co.uk but there are many different types and brands.
Commercial tampons are the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options – that's right, there are a lot more things to choose from than just tampons or pads – this is because tampons prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, dry out the vaginal walls, introduce chemicals into your vagina, and give bacteria a pores place to multiply within.
The reason it is so much more harmful at night is firstly because the longer you leave tampons in the more increased the risk because tampons are not hygienic when within the vagina bacteria multiply and there is no way for the vagina to clean itself, as most people sleep around 7 hours that means the tampon would be left in longer than is recommended and so you are at increased risk of infecitons and toxic shock syndrome [TSS].
They are also more harmful at night because tampons don't just absorb menstrual flow but also discharge, as well as discharge cleaning out your vagina of bacteria and dirt discharge is there to help keep the walls of the vagina moist as they are very delicate. When you are laying down gravity doesn't have the same effect as it would when standing up meaning that the blood from your uterus is not flowing into the tampon, thus all the tampon has to absorb is discharge, this means the mucus membrane of the vaginal walls gets dry and splits more than it would from normal tampon use – bacteria can get into these splits, it also increase rate of chemical absorption from the tampons and if TSS was to occur toxins produced would get into the blood stream faster.

I wear tampons during the day, changing at LEAST every 6 hours. Then I wear a pad to bed.

Yes, it's safe to wear a tampon at night---as long as you don't leave it in for more than like 7-8 hours.

Yeah they say it's safe to have a tampon in for 8 hours. To be honest, I've slept longer than that and had no trouble. TSS is such a tiny risk- I wouldn't let it stop you. Pads can leak at night, who wants that?!
