I am wondering why it is said not to give a baby cow's milk or egg until they are close to a year old, yet baby food companies make desserts, like baby custard, with these ingredients? I thought even cooked that it was still not ok. What's the deal? (And yes I will consult my physician also!)

Formula or breastmilk are the most nutritionally balanced for infants to a year old...
(If you notice, infant formula is made from cows milk)

The reason they suggest not giving cows milk (like say filling a bottle or sippy with pure milk) is because it lacks nutrients..

As for the eggs (and it is the raw ones) they are known for causing food allergies...

The baby deserts you are feeding your baby is not the main source of nutrition.. you would still be feeding baby formula or breastmilk.. and you still have to watch for any reactions with them then any other food you introduce..

hope that answers your question.. A lil side of something is an ok thing.. they are trying to discouage people from eliminating breastmilk/formula with cows milk before 1 year.
By the time they are 1 they should be eating solid foods as their main nutritional intake and not fluids.

Yes you can give your child the 2nd foods.. The custard the yogurt all that stuff.. just watch for allergies.. and of course, when in doubt.. call your ped.. ;)

Babies are more likely to develop allergies at a young age, and have trouble digesting more food. The baby food is super-processed and preserved, lessening the liklihood of a baby having a bad reaction to it. It's fairly new thinking to keep a baby strictly on breast milk for the first six months, and back in the day (like 10 years ago, not 100) we started feeding kids baby food (or real food) at about 4 months. Listen to your doctor, read all you can, and then listen to your heart and what your baby is telling you. If your family has a lot of allergies or digestive issues, you may want to be more cautious, but I personally don't think a scrambled egg or a little cow's milk now and then will hurt a 6 month old.

I don't think Gerber or Beechnut would make something that wasn't safe for a baby. I have called both of those companies many times, any time I have a question. They are always friendly and very helpful, and always offer to send you coupons!

I think those kinds of things are fine. Surely Gerber and those other companies know what they're doing when it comes to baby food.
