I have a '97 sportster that I am customizing. I am running a side mount license plate light./ tail light and a fender mounted sparco stop light. The rear tailight wires are: black, blue, red/yellow & orange/white. My hanyes wiring diagram doesn't do a real good job at breaking down exactly which are which. Can anyone help and tell me which I need to run for JUST the brake light and which for the tail light/ license plate light ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you buy a test light (fairly cheap) you could figure it out. Just clip the alligator clip to a good ground (frame or neg terminal of your battery), turn the key to "on" and poke the test light in the wire leads. You will probably have to turn on your lights (while the plug is out) to find your license plate light. The tester should light up when you find the right wire. You can check it by leaving the test light in and turning your lights on and off. If the test light goes on and off, thats the wire. If you stick the light in the leads one at a time and tap the brakes the light should flash when you're on the brake light wire. Good luck!

Did your tail light license plate light and your brake light come with mounting instructions? Waiting while you check the trash for the packaging....OK, if not Godmother was right..green is running light red is brake light. its just a simple matter of finding which wire lights up the tail light/license plate light when you touch the green wire to it. The red wire is next but make sure you are pushing your brake down before you try to test. I didnt mean to dumb that down, just eliminating problems. Good LUCK!

Ok darlin'...here's the problem here.
Your brake light wire SHOULD be RED!
& your tail light wire SHOULD be GREEN!
This isn't as you described, but is standard. I think it's why you're having trouble getting an answer.
I've been riding and working on HD, & my husband has been dealer tech 30+ yrs, & I called to double check this w/him before I submitted this answer!
Good luck!!
