I think the word you're looking for is "posthumous." Though to fully describe the concept you name, you might need the phrase "posthumous recognition," or "posthumous honours," or somesuch. For example: "Many of the works created during Mr. Smith's lifetime received only posthumous recognition."
Of course, if you're in the U.S., you'll want to turn those "ou"s into "o"
