i have a neon and i was getting like 17 miles per gallon. would the egr be responsible for this? i just had it fixed and am hoping to get better mileage with the engine light off now. how much is the egr responsible for as far as bad performance is concerned?

If the code was for your egr or egr related, it has a lot to do with your performance AND gas milage. egr stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation and as it's name implies it sends gas rich exhaust fumes back to the cylinders in essence to recycle them. you should also find out if your egr was "clogged". if so, I recommend having a fuel injection cleaning done at a local shop. this will clean your throttle body, intake manifold ports/passages and your fuel injectors.

It will effect the cars performance. It will also cause deposits in the injectors if not working properly. The EGR function is to recirculate unburned gas back through the intake to be burned instead of going into the atmosphere as polution.
If the EGR sticks open, it will cause idle problems also.
But yes you should get a little better miliage.Master tech 40 yrs.

LAB has it right. The EGR valve is only used to reduce the cylinder temperatures in the combustion Chambers. There is no appreciable fuel or oxygen in the exhaust gas, therefore it contributes nothing to the combustion except take up space.
AS for your fuel economy, other things will contribute to the loss of efficiency. A stuck open thermostat, a coolant temperature sensor out of range, a MAP or MAF sensor out of range, a sleepy oxygen sensor, fuel pressure regulator and more can all contribute to poor fuel economy.
This is something that you will need to have investigated specifically. And when you take it to the shop, don't forget to inform them of the previous repairs, or any changes in your driving habits.
Here is an area that there is NO SUCH THING as too much information. If you aren't sure about its relevance, tell them anyway and let them discard what they don't need to know.

Good Luck

The exhaust gas recycling EGR valve does exactly what it says except its purpose is not to burn unburnt fuel, its to take up space in your cylinder to reduce the formation of oxides of nitrogen NOx. The EGR valve should not work at idle or wide open throttle. This should create a slight increase in gas mileage but I would look more at a tune up first.
