If you're looking for some good "swords and sorcery" books with a gay hero, I highly recommend Mercedes Lackey's series "Magic's Pawn", "Magic's Promise", and "Magic's Price". I don't think there are any lewd sex scenes, but the love interest is male-male. And it gives an example of a gay man becoming a national hero.

There is an old Old OLD book called "The Lure" by Felice Picano, which I liked alot, when it came out, in 1979. It's a thriller.

An even older book (1972) that's definitely worth a read is Mary Renault's "The Persian Boy", which is about the relationship of a Persian eunuch and Alexander the Great. Again, it shows the gay character in a very positive light.
