Unfortunately, this is ultimately to do with the penis, or, as I prefer to call it, the penai. The penis rules the way men think.
Example: Man with construction job gets up in the morning, and has a stiffy. His wife is already up and getting ready for work, so no-one to relieve said stiffy. Feeling frustrated, he reluctantly gets up and gets ready for work.
He is already subconsciously hating women that day, due to non-penai relief.
He goes to work, and has a meeting, on site. A female construction worker, very knowledgeable and experienced, starts to boice her opinion about something. Just the thought of her reminds him of his morning's penai episode. He can't bear to possibly "let her get away with not relieving his sexual frustration" by entertaining her views and thus giving her some power over him, so he just finds it easier to pretend she's not there.
Not much you can do I'm afraid, except shout louder.

The construction industry is a tough business for a woman. Women who have done well in construction have been mentored along the way. If you can find someone to assist this way, learn how they handle situations. I think this will definitely help.
Since you have been on the job for 6 years, it sounds as if you are respected for your work, but maybe not for your opinion. Some people, men and women, have trouble asserting themselves. If you think this may be an issue, take some training to help you. Toastmasters might be useful.
I hope one of these ideas works out for you! Good luck.

Hmmm.. not all female managers / administrators are bad.
It just seems that the bad ones really are bad.
We have one where I work, sometimes she makes good decisions but at other times everyone wonders where her head was... :-)
And no, it doesn't appear to coincide with a particular time of the month, we've kept records.
Another big problem is her inability to admit she might have got something wrong...
The females in particular have an intense dislike of her, but I've noticed over the years that women are much more prone to open warfare and dislike between themselves than men do amongst themselves.

Mostly its the way men are brought up. It is going to still take 3 to 4 generations before we can finally see everyone as equals. It sucks but it needs to start with our kids. We need to teach them that women and men can do the same things and have the same great ideas. We are still living the thoughts of our grand parents. We will not see the change in our lifetime.

When I worked in the industry it was the same for some men.
When their site agent told them something their eyes glazed over and when he had left (it was nearly all men in my time on site) they would continue doing exactly what they had been doing before he came.
Even some of the people that worked for me had the same tendancies. Its an odd social structure on site particularly if the contractors are not used to working with one another.

I think its probably because men varied from brilliant to rubbish at running this country for hundreds of years.
Then Thatcher got in, and she turned out to be the most evil person who had ever been in charge of anything and the men are terrified of something like that happening again.
Still Blair & Bush are trying to make her look ok these days.

this goes to way back in history where women were looked at as under dogs, secondly will always have maternity leaves along the way thus comoplicating the whole leadership status and yet there are free men all so available regardless of whether they are capable or not.

You need to remember that it is only very recently that women have made real inroads into overcoming male domination. I think many men think that if they bury their heads in the sand, things will revert to how they were in their childhood, with men being in charge of everything. Dream on!

I guess it's partly ego and partly because men are "supposed" to dominate in personal relationships (not that I agree with it), and that need to dominate spills over into their career.
I'm a guy, by the way...
P.S.: I liked meg's answer just below... LOL! Some imagination!

Because they think once a month we are all going to become quivering hysterical chocolate fiends unable to make any decisions and the rest of the month that we should be at home being a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom.
Not all men think this - just some, I dont mind the whore in the bedroom part of it all though (just with my husband mind you!)
