history is scattered iwth the rise and fall of empires and civilizations. The cause of the fall are numerous, famine, disease defeat in battle, pressure from encroaching neighbors, climatic changes, social distress, religious fanaticism. Eventually a society just seems to collapse under its own wieght.

Well there are of course still LOTS of Mayans in Mexico. But they had TWO great civilizations that appeared to vanish from the face of the Earth without any known cause. Their great cities and pyramids simply abandoned.
The same thing seems to have happened up in Teotihuacan (just north of Mexico City) as well about 1500 years ago. That great city was estimated to be one of the five greatest cities on Earth at one point and was totally abandoned when the Mexhica and the Aztecs arrived hundreds of years later.
Because they left no written records, we don't know.... It is a great mystery for sure!

Olmecs(1300BC-700BC), Maya(250AD-900AD), Inca(1200-1533), & the Aztec(1240's-1521).
The Inca and Aztec were wiped out by Spanish Invasion. The Olmec's and Maya's decline are both myseteriously lost with time.
However, many claim they simply interbred with other groups around them, and their civilisation went into decline until the rise of other meso-american societies, such as the Aztecs and Inca.

There are a number of theories but I think the one that makes most sense is that neighboring tribes conquered them as well as bred them out. The people stopped believing in the old gods and such when the government could no longer protect them.

In a book titled the "The Celestine Prophecy" the author suggests that the Mayians simply "evolved" into beings of pure energy. Hey! it's not MY idea, I'm just passing along another theory.

Take your pick: famine, war, illness
I saw a very convincing show that said drought (famine) was what finally finished the civilization.

They got measles from the European (Spanish) explorers. They had never had measles before, and their immune system couldn't handle it.
