Take a Valium and a pain pill and get on with it. Part of being an adult id doing things we don't want to do. You might feel more comfortable if you can see what is going on, so ask the doctor to use mirrors for you. Get it done.

Find a female medical clinic nearby, and ask them what technique they use. There is a new method called the brush technique, which doesn't require you to lay there with your legs up in the air. If you have a partner or close friend you can take them with you for support. They won't see anything as they should be standing at the head of the bed, and your privates should be covered. Please don't put the smear off, as thousands of women die each year from cervical cancer, and the interventions for untreated cervical cancer are far more invasive than a simple smear.

You should fear not knowing what a smear can tell you more than how you have to lay to get it done. The woman's body is an amazing thing, but it also needs to be carefully looked after to keep from having problems. If not for yourself, do it for those that love you and care about you.

Unfortunately, you are just going to have to put your fears behind you. It is very uncomfortable lying there, so I always make small talk with the doctor or hum a song in my head. Five years is way too long without a pap. Schedule one now. You're supposed to get them once a year and with all this HPV scare, I suggest you do it very soon.

I am with you on that one girl. I discussed this fear with my doctor and he suggested that I bring headphones in with me. It surprisingly helped a great deal. I just laid back and listened to music...it made the process go by much quicker and kept me from being so nauseous because of my apprehension.

Get some valium or something if you need it before the test. That's my plan. I'm way over due for one too and scared!!
