missknowitall is right. Just as "Dear Sirs" is the plural form of "Dear Sir", so "Dear Mesdames" is the correct plural form of "Dear Madam". It comes from French (mes dames = my ladies), do you see? I would use it to impress a business that was run by more than one woman (and no men), but I've never had that opportunity. The sir and madam titles are very quaint and old school now, and I wonder how they survived the rise of non-sexist language in the early 1980s. If I have a formal letter to write I do use "Dear Sirs" but not thinking of the word as gender-specific. The title that I really prefer is one that I picked up from CND, back in the 1970s, and that is "Dear friends".

To be totally correct there is no such thing as a female version of Dear Sirs, as it is (chauvenistically) assumed that men run businesses.
A formal letter should ALWAYS be addressed as Dear Sirs even if it is to a company completely staffed by women and the correct form of closing if Dear Sirs has been used is ALWAYS Yours faithfully.
Dear Madam is totally unacceptable. To Whom It May Concern is purely for legal matters and went out with the Arc. It harks back to the days of the quill pen!!

Hi....just a tip....I used to answer peoples queries in my last job and if someone started the letter with 'Dear Sirs' it would p!ss me off because you are presuming that I am a male which is a rather sexist assumption to make. So don't listen to the people saying to start the letter 'Dear Sirs' unless you want to start on the wrong foot.
