Count the number of lines between each number.

If the ruler is in inches, usually there will be 16. In centimeters, there will be 10. Longer lines mean a significant point along the way. So, between 1 and 2 inches, halfway will be longer line showing 1/2 of an inch. Normally it will show each 1/16th of an inch. On a ruler in centimeters, it will show lines for each millimeter.

Good luck!

The truth is the lines between the numbers represents fractions of an "inch" if you are in the USA. The long line right in the middle is half an inch. The line right between that line and the last line is 3/4 of an inch. Most rulers are separated into 8ths.

In a ruler (if it is marked in centimeters) you will have 10 lines including the lines near the numbers between the two numbers(lets assume 1 and 2)You will notice that the first and the tenth line are the longest whereas the fifth line is slightly longer than the other lines. The distance between the first and tenth line is a centimeter and the smaller lines help measure millimeters.
10 millimeters = 1 centimeter
So the second line measures 1.1cm, the third line 1.2cm and so on.

there are 16 lines between each inch on a ruler. 8 lines equal 1/2 inch. 12 lines equal 3/4 inch or 0.750 inches. 4 lines equal 1/4 inch or, 0.250, etc, etc. It's a fraction based on the number of lines-16.
