Gary F, that's quite a list of republican paedophiles!
In my opinion eye contact is essential for effective communication. Facial expression including the yes ammounts to around 40% of all communication between human beings.
By covering it up with either a balaclava, sunglasses or a veil your are reducing your abillity to put your point across and you look like you have something to hide.

Correct the American's are as subtle as a brick through plate glass in a lot of these situations, but being honest who can blame them when every other Iraqi would rather see them dead than alive. Its a hopeless situation. The sooner we all pull out and leave them to kill each other and not our troops the better. i almost get the impression after watching the endless pointless deaths and killings that the people of Iraq dont need/want stability and democracy in any form.

Sort of.
He praps should have put it better.
Condemn me if U like but 4 once in his political career I agree with him.
Did we really base our invasion of Afghanistan on ridding the country of the Taliban & the oppression of women with those hideous burkas, just 2 allow the same oppression 2 continue, over here in the UK?
If it is religious it would B a wide-spread, but some wear them, some don't & I think that's what UK is lacking right now, consistency.

There is no way to win the hearts and minds of the people of Iraq.
The evil regime of George Walker Bush has destroyed their country, and they have every right to hold a grudge, to feel angry and disgusted with the way the United States Government has ruined their lives.
Stomping around in combat fatigues with loaded guns and itchy trigger fingers is just kind of NOT the way to make friends and influence people.

it is not easy but if you try to show respect to local customs and culture ie learn abit before you go and a few key words and phrases be sensitive to local needs and offer real assistance rather than just charity ie take off your sunglasses smile and show a little respect and you might just get a bit further

Sunglasses have nothing to do with the hearts and minds policy. It is a self-defense mechanism designed to keep people off guard.

face to face communication is important, but jack straw shouldnt have used muslims as his example. it should have been more general, but he has a good point. would you rather have a conversation with someone you cant see or staring into their eyes, understanding their feelings?

I agree.
But in all my dealing with our North American friends i haven't seen any that consider thier audience and adjust the way they communicate to local customs.
