i own a repair shop, and if you facing the engine its going to be on the left side of it down next tot he bottom of the transmission, next to where the transmission, and motor bolt together it May be a little tight down their because of the exhaust manifold it will come out the bottom of the car though i have took a lot of them off before, just be sure and take the main cable off of it before you try to get it out other wise its not to bad of a job to do,usually 1 hour on and off is a good time to allow for this, good luck i hope this help,s.

The big cable coming off of the solenoid should take you to the starter. My suggestion is to follow the cable to the starter, once you have found it take a small hammer or big crescent wrench and hit the side of the starter. The reason for this is, if the starter has an open winding or bad connection because of a bad brush or commutator, this will shake things up enough to make it catch. If this works, you now know where the starter is (1) and you have a fair idea of what needs to be done (2) and if you are mechanically inclined you can re-brush the starter for about $4 and some of your time or you can just get another at your local 7-11 type parts house.

Your problem sounds more like a bad cable connection.
Try this to confirm. Turn on your dome light and try to start your Ranger. If the dome light goes out your cables (+ & GND) need to be cleaned.
