So you can connect to the Internet kinda like you need cable company to get cable phone co to get a dial tone electric co to get electricity and so on.

ISP means Internet Service Provider - they give you the connection to the Internet, like a phone handset on its own would do you no good; you need a phone service provider.

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider...they are the ones that you actually connect to. They provide the gateway to the Internet.

because all computers on a network need an address, for the internet it is called an ip (internet protocol) address. Without this you can not get on the network.
ISPs own ranges of ip addresses and so when you log on you are assigned an ip by the provider which then means you have access to the network

Because you probably don't want to pay the $3,000 a months it cost have a T1 line run to your house.

if you have wifi you could leech onto someones wireless access point.. then you wouldnt need an isp!
