Most places only require you to call and make the change....., banks, government, credit cards require a copy of the marriage certificate to accompany the name change.

You should have indicated what name you wanted to use on the marriage license. Once the marriage license was sent back to the office, and you received your official marriage certificate, you would have been able to use your new name without doing anything else.

If you did not indicate the name change on the marriage license, then you have two options: (1) do a legal name change by going to court; or the easier option is to (2) try and correct the marriage license (not sure if you can do it now) or get a new marriage license and get re-married and make sure your new name is on the license this time! It's fine to do this. Just get a new license and get remarried at the marriage license office.

Changing last and middle name - If you get married and change your middle name as well as your last name, be sure to check with the DMV to see what documentation you need. I took my husband's last name and changed my middle name to my maiden name. I took my new social security card to the DMV (in NJ) and found out that they can only change your last name in their records, not your middle and they can't remove your former middle initial from your license. Apparently, you have to change your passport first or show them court papers to change your middle name. Just something to keep in mind so you don't have to go through the same thing twice

FIRST stop is the DMV to get your new license. Once you get the actual license, you take that to social security to get your card! I just got mine in the mail yesterday so I am official! If you go to the nest.com it gives tips on what to do when changing your name, but it tells you to go to the social security office first...so thats what I did. I sat there and waited my turn just for them to tell me that I needed my new license first. Take your marriage certificate with you when you go. As for changing you n ame on your credit cards and such..I haven't started that process yet! Good luck!

The marriage license allows you to sign with your new last name. You need to contact the social security office and any other professional or organization that you belong to and change your name with them. Your employer also will want to have your name change on file. Congrats on the wedding
