A heavy armchair is currently on a black tile on the floor. You want to move it so it is on the adjacent white tile, facing the same way. It is so heavy that you can only move it by swiveling it by 90 degrees around one of its corners. Is it possible to make the move?

No -- you can't do it.

Let's suppose you are facing North -- and that each 1/4 turn puts you on a tile of a different color. That means that one turn will make you face East or West and put you on a white tile. The next turn will put you on a Black Tile facing South or North.

If you are facing North -- you are back where you were -- so there is no point in that move -- so assume you are facing South. The nect mofe puts you facing East or West on a White Tile. Since you have already been here, there is no point in that move.

Odd numbered moves will always put you East or West on White. Even numbered turns will always put you North or South on Black.

You can swivel it, but the leg you are swivelling will still be on the black tile. However! if one of the other legs is on a white tile you have a different ball game! But I cannot see how after swivelling it will be in the same plain! (Why am I doing this!!!)
