Dr Zhivago is a magnificent book, however, it actually is about how the Middle Classes got punished by the revolutionary movement, yet were not the aristocracy, who caused the problems.
A brief summary of the Revolution now follows.
WW1 had been raging for 3 years, Russian men were dying by the millions on the front. Nicholas Romanov was with his troops at the front. Due to the men being absent from their normal jobs, many things were failing back home. The crops had suffered inclement weather, and a shortage of people to farm the land led to food shortages, and in some areas starvation and disease.
On a more scandalous note, Nicholas' wife (Alexandra) was spending a lot of time with the 'mad monk' Rasputin, a renowned womaniser and Siberian shamanistic Orthodox Catholic priest, who enjoyed getting drunk and visiting prostitutes. He seemed to be able to relate to and calm the young son, Alexei, who was a haemophiliac (his blood did not clot when he received a cut or bruise). Alexandra was a devout Catholic who trusted Rasputin, yet the media had a field day, speculating about their relationship.
Ultimately, the Russian troops from the battleship Potemkin, when discovering in port that the citizens were starving, refused to open fire on rioting citizens and instead killed their generals. News of this flashed around the Russian troops, who had wanted Nicholas to make peace with the Germans/Austro-Hungarians. Nicholas made no peace treaty because he was loyal to his duty to the UK royal family, and his treaties with the Serbs. The army mutinied, and a group of politicos took power. This was in Spring and these politicos were the Mensheviks. They sent the troops back to their normal jobs, and to the fields. Unfortunately, crops planted in Spring are not harvested until the end of Summer, and during this time a man called Lenin entered the country from Sweden, and with the help of his master of spin, Trotsky, started stirring up trouble for the new government, who also had problems with what were called the 'White Russians', (Ukraineans, Belarussians) who were funded by the UK and France, and were loyal to Nicholas. In August, Lenin seized power in the name of the Bolsheviks, harvested the crops, fed the people, and using the new formed 'Red Army' (a standing army of fanatical soldiers, formed by Trotsky) fought the white russians. They killed Nicholas, Alexandra and their 5 children (Alexei & 4 daughters) at Ekaterinaburg and threw their bodies down a well. This meant that the Whites couldn't recapture them and put them back into power. Ultimately the Red Army won, and Russia had peace and stability.
You may note I have not used the title Tsar/Czar, because the Russian royal family abandoned this title in the early 18th century and were actually addressed as Emperor of All Russias.
Good Luck

You could try watching Dr. Zhivago. It's a long darn movie, but you might at least see what it was like for real people.
