Right now the grass is going into a dormant stage. I would get some Pre-Emergent and put it down now. Water in as usual. Water at least once a week during the winter if you do not get any rain/snow. At the onset of Spring, put down Pre-Emergent again. Both of those applications will hold down the weeds for the coming growing season. Four weeks later put down a "good" fertilizer. Water at least once a week and make sure you mow "every" week. Mowing is very important for weed control. Do not mow your grass in the same direction/pattern all the time. Alternate your mowing patterns. This will give you a better looking lawn. Good Luck!!!

It's hard to answer this without seeing what is in your lawn, but here are a couple of ideas. Unless you have had a drought or your lawn mower is cutting the grass to within in inch of the ground, your lawn sounds like it is indeed made mostly of weeds. There are several weedy grasses that seed in late spring and die in the early fall making the lawn brown. You will need to get rid of these and plant new grass.
To get your grass started you are going to need to sow grass seed anytime between late September and when it snows. Make sure the seed lands on soil. In other words you should be able to see soil and not a bunch of dead grass. If you have to, you may have to rake it in. It's big job if you have an acre. It's a good idea to apply grass fertilizer at this time too.
In the Spring you apply Scott's Turf builder with Halts. This prevents the weeks from sprouting but not the grass you seeded last fall. As a final suggestion, since it sounds like you have weeds that sprout late in the spring, put this down again in late may.
Hope this helps.

Well, watering it never hurts. At this time of year, your best bet is to put out some pre-emergent, then start early next year with the fertilizer and weed killer. Good luck, I'm more or less in the same boat.
