I keep meaning to find out the answer but no-one seems to know. this is a rubber ball, about the size of a squash ball, hanging down from underneath the ironing board on a little chain. there's a hole in it, which tapers inwards.
I wondered whether it might be designed to hold some sort of laundry pen or something, but that seems silly.
Can someone put me out of my misery and tell me what this is supposed to be for?

It's not to adjust anything - it's just hanging from one of the metal bars. It's literally just a rubber ball that seems to serve no purposes at all. I've asked the folks and others of that generation to see whether it's a hangover from how ironing used to be done in the old days, but no joy.
Wish you could post piccies on this thing

no it's not to put on the end of the iron - think of a solid squash ball as if you'd driven a pencil into it and left a hole shaped like the end of the pencil. That's what this looks like - you can't put that on the end of an iron!
