Basically, it means you look at a machine's parts to see if they are wearing down. It looks like you can use imaging on a computer to determine what is wearing down....

Ok, reading further, I guess you take oil sample from a machine and you look at it closely (like under a microscope) to see if there are bits of metal in it - to determine if something is beginning to break down.

Analysis by instrumental means of the particles (size & so forth) of worn metal & dirt in lubricants of moving parts of machines - mostly oil in engines, but other types as well.

My dad ran thousands of these tests on grease & oils from fighter aircraft, for instance.
