Read up on the life of Stalin. He had some very effective ways of dealing with dissent. Number one seems to be to have a ruthless secret police headed by loyal chief of secret police for whom you already have a replacement waiting in the wings when you blame the current one for being "over enthusiastic" and misinterpreting your orders. Number two: trust no one.
From time to time have show trials of "traitors" and foreign spys and make sure you purge the officer corps of your army occasionally. Institute a system of prison and slave labour camps where the minimum stay is twenty years - also helps with the economy. When you've done that keep your immediate subordinates drunk and send their wives to the camps once in a while.
Oh, one more thing - kill all those who helped you into power in the first place. If after that you still have problems start praying to the deity of your choice as Stalin did.

Firstly you need to get rid of all your opposition. This can be done by accusing them of being traitors. That way you can justify killing htem. Secondly take control of the media, that way you can ensure that they only broadcast stories and prints news that you want the people to hear. You can also use it to indoctrinate the people into believing that any opponents that still remain are evil people and need to be got rid of. Once you have the population on your side step one becomes so much easier. Ban all books except those that you personally approve of. Only allow people who support you to get an education. Educated people are dangerous as they tend to think for themselves. Build up a secret Police network that can montior every aspect of what is going on. Replace all the leaders in you military with people who support you.
The best way is to be popular with the people. A dictator is only bad if the people he/she is dictating too don't want them there. If your people like you they would not support a coup so it is much less likely to happen.

I find that a random killing every so often keeps the subjects on their toes; my subjects, at least, seem to be awfully fearful of public execution. The media can then be easily manipulated (seeing as I have supreme control over my country's media, as I assume you have in yours) to say the the executee was plotting to overthrow me / poison the water supply / mate with a goat. This way I keep them down, and sometimes, just sometimes, I even get it right (but naturally that's usually kept hush-hush).

Set an example. Squash a power figure like the tiny flea he is! Make sure they see him go down. this will quell any resistance.

Kill a lot of people, especially anyone who speaks out against you.
Regulate any and all organizations as a gathering of people is dangerous.
Do not let your own inner military guard get too close to power. Knock them off periodically to keep them off balance.
Keep the poor people happy. They are dangerous otherwise.

Employ secret police service that is vehemently loyal to you then allow them all the latitude they need to crush all opposition whether it be real or imagined.
