I had my first child 3 weeks before completing teacher training college. I had to do a 10,000 word dissertation while I was looking after a newborn (after having a C section). I sat the little fellow on my lap, and breast fed him, while I typed it all up! It didn't bother him and I think it helped us to bond.

Some studies have indicated that the development of eye muscles used viewing something up close are different from the development of those used in normal everyday reaction to visual stimulus. --Ergo, confirmed "bookworms", or people who sit a couple of feet in front of a TV, wind up needing glasses for nearsightedness earlier than most people.
I would not put the baby that close to a monitor on a regular bais for these reasons.

I don't see a problem with useing a computer while holding a baby. I have used my computer while holding my 10 month old daughter. She actually enjoys it cause if I am chatting with my mom or neice my daughter will press the keyboard and I tell them that my daughter sent them a message.

my baby quite often sits on my lap while I am on the computer. A lot of the time he is on webcam so that his Nan can watch him, she lives 220 miles away. he even types messages to her !!!!
I also found the the patterns on Media Player calm him down, the slow ones were the best!

I'm holding my daughter right now, they don't really pay attention to what you're doing, plus it's really hard to type, they like to play on the keyboard. It's not going to harm your child.

when my baby was very young, I would hold him and he would sleep while I checked e-mails and stuff. He seems perfectly fine, he just wants to play with the keyboard all the time now (of course I don't let him).

I think your baby should be the priority not you being in front of a computer.
