I'm setting up a broadband connection for the first time. Can I put one ADSL filter into the telephone socket and then attach a "splitter" to it so I can connect my telephone, TiVo and Sky set as well as my router? Or do I have to put the "splitter" on first and then add an ADSL filter for each of the things I need to connect to the line?

I'd say you can plug the filter directly into the wall then the splitter into the filter.

the filter normally goes as close to the phone socket as possible, attach the filter to the wall socket, attach your ADSL modem to the RJ11 socket on the filter. then use the BT socket to connect all of your telephone equipment. via socket doublers, extension cords etc. if you have more than one phone socket in the house you will need a ADSL filter for each socket.

put your splitter into the filter and the filter into the wall socket. This is what I do at home for my router, phone and Sky box.
