Are you asking about the quadratic formula? The quadratic formula is: (-b + sqrt b^2 -4ac)/2a

In the equation x^2 - 12x + 35

a= the number in front of x^2 which is 1
b=the number in front of x which is 12
c=the number with no variable, 35

That's a quadratic equation. a is the coefficient of the squared term, b is the coefficient of the simple power term and c is the last term which is just a constant. Basically you go from higher powered to lower powered till you get to the end. a, b, c, d, e, f, g.... etc
