If the muffler broke away from a pipe, then it will emit a loud exhaust sound, but if a baffle broke insdie the muffler then you will get a rattling inside the muffler. Either way, replace it.
good luck

You will notice a distinct change in sound from when the muffler was in good condition. If holed it will be making a loud raspy farty sound.

A good check is, when the muffler is cold (ie engine just started) place your hand over the end. If the exhaust system is holed the engine will still be able to breath and will continue to run. If the exhaust is sound the engine will stall.

Car makes an abominable noise. Cops stop you for violating noise ordinances. Visual inspection of muffler shows rusted out spots, or rusted out holes along the exhaust pipe leading to the muffler.

Muffler replacement in many cases is pretty cheap- My last one cost about $60 and took about a half an hour to complete. (that was years ago, might be higher now due to inflation...)
