You don't need to fully disable the firewall - but allow messenger.
Click Start - settings - control panel. Ensure you are in 'classic view'. Then you can go into the windows firewall icon and choose to allow messenger

If you have windows xp firewall
click on start, control panel then click on security centre, click on windows firewall at the bottom and select OFF.
If its another firewall like zone alarm right clickthe icon on the taskbar and select shut down or close
Before you turn it off try allowing it to accept messenger and msn
Remember if you turn it off you are not covered for protection
make sure you turn it back on again

if its windows firewall then go to control panel open the windows secuity option and turn off firewall.
however it is safer if you can manage it to leave the firewall running but create rules to allow certian applications to access the net. it is best to look at the help for your particular firewall to find out how to do this, some have ready made rules for popular applications other you have to look up the port that the application is trying to reach and allow that as a destination.

It's best to check the programs you want to use are in the allowed list or the firewall will block them. It depends if it's windows own firewall or you virus protection like Norton as to how you do it. But it's the same principle, you have to tell it to allow the program access.

find your windows security centre, and you can disable it that way. But becareful as it may let something bad in. You could go to your firewall program and click on allow programs and allow msn and yahoo messenger.

Rather than turning off your firewall and letting your computer be vulnerable to attacks, you should check your firewall configuration and ensure that both messengers are on the "allowed" list.

As far as I know -
go to start, then control panel. Find an Icon that will say firewall or windows firewall. Right mouse click on it and then click open.
It should then give you three options. Click which ever suits your needs.
Then apply this.
This is for windows xp
