Obviously, the USA is the most powerful in wealth, imports & exports but...... the Americans hate the fact that they have no history as they are relitivly a new country compared to the thousands of years that the UK has under it's belt. We are respected by other countries as our ties with them go back to hundreds of years as our Royalty can connect it self with nearly every country in Europe. Also, after the thousands of years that we have been around we are here to stay. America has the chance of falling like many a great empire that grew to big to quickly.

Thin Kaboudit, you obviously have no idea about England, so go away before you show even more of your ignorance.
The cost of living in the US is lower, but the average person in the UK is richer than the average person in the USA, so it evens out. At least we don't have slums and ghettos.
The chance to advance oneself by working hard has existed here for a very long time. Anyone, no matter how poor, receives free education to the age of 18, and people get jobs based on the qualifications they get, not how rich they are, jobs haven't been out of bounds to low born people since the 19th century. Are you just guessing how we work here? I cannot think of any more untrue statement; if anything, we're better than you on that front.
The majority of Britain now is middle class, but even for the council estate people life is good, you cannot claim life is only good for the rich unless you have no prior knowledge about us.
Until 40 years ago you still had segregation and measures in place to prevent black people voting/getting an good education, and the USA had slavery a hundred years before that, long after every other western country abolished it. Even now there are Black slums with life expectancies and death rates akin to third world countries. At least we aren't inherently racist.

I think England is the most powerful country! In terms of 'old money', humanitarian effort, imports & exports. Free enterprise is what keeps England ahead in the global market!! Plus England has Royalty!!!

Obviously the UK has the upper hand when it comes to future prospects.
The US suffers from a major difficulty in that its citizens are oil-hungry, wasting huge amounts of energy per capita per year. The average American refuses to make cutbacks.
In the UK, the average citizen is willing to make cutbacks, as this is looked upon as 'patriotic'.
Now with the inflow of gas from Scandanavia, resulting in the gas being given away for free this past week, this helps to strenghten the British economy in the long-term.
China and India are currently increasing their usage of oil, thereby putting enormous pressure on the world markets.
By extension, this increases pressure on the US.
So, the UK wins hands down.
Shadow Dancer
If China, Japan and other countries called in their loans, the true extent of America's dismal financial standing would become evident. Back in Reagan's day, he said there was little point worrying about the state of the US economy, as the (then) national debt ran three and a half times to the moon and back, and that was the dollar stacked one on top of the other!
Sharp intake of breath!
Sorry to report, your economy has grown much worse since then.
I will not mention the countries you where your government illegally deposed lawfully elected leaders and financed local death squads.

On cost of living alone, I'd say England.
And overall I'd say England. Maybe not political/military power, but good lord, they're managed to keep themselves together as well as be a world power for, what, around eight hundred years? Got to admire that.
Plus they win on heritage and culture.
For the record, I'm an American.
ETA: If the US paid England's taxes, I wouldn't be working full-time just to be able to afford to go to school.

The USA is the better place to live if you are a "regular person", the cost of living is far lower, "average" people can enjoy a much, much higher standard of living, and the chance to 'advance' yourself by working hard actually exists. England is the better place to live if you are already very, very wealthy; It's greener, life proceeds at a less hectic pace, and if you are already rich you can always buy yourself anything that is missing. England is altogether more civilized. The USA is fresher and more exciting, but also a little dangerous.

I'd say this can't be answered because England is better at somethings and the US is better at other things, so I reckon it's even, but if you count by area then England are probably better because they're a lot smaller.
