For children, put up a "Beware of snakes" sign. You might try a tall fence of chicken wire for cats.
For birds, snails and insects? Why in the world would you want to keep them out? Without them, you wouldn't have a real garden. You might be able to stop some of the unwanted insects that eat your vegetables with seven dust (check your local garden supply center).

Good fences make good neighbors. And keeping the gate locked will keep children out. Cats--nothing will keep them out. Birds--get a dog. Snails--get the slug be gone from Home Depot to get rid of them. Insects--there are different pest control sprays and granules at Home Depot as well.

cats: powder or liquid repellents made for cats and dogs

birds: tin pie pans hanging from branches, netting over plants

snails: repellents made specifically for snails and slugs

Insects: spray when insects are present with appropriate insecticide

Children: Live trap then release back into the wild, electric fence around property, a "scarekid" that looks like Janet Reno.

It is easier to eradicate them once they've actually entered your property. There are a number of exciting ways in which this can be achieved;

1/ You can't go wrong with flowerpot mines.

2/ 6 inch nails half-buried in the ground and hidden in the grass.

3/ Motion-sensitive sprinklers. Only effective when emitting acid or poisonous gas.

Legally, you can't be touched as they are trespassing. It is also a good way to catch dinner.

P.S. Hollow stones filled with homemade pipe bombs can also be employed.

Best of luck.

Get a pet tiger. I find tigers are more suitable than lions in this case because tigers don't mind the rain as much, and in this country we are quite predisposed to the odd shower. Also tigers don't mind being solo creatures, lions prefer to have company and so getting a lion is really going to require getting more than one and generally the pet shop will one have the one and the rest will have to be ordered in, which really, is just a hassle.

You should have a greenhouse and lock it up all the time! You can't keep cats, birds and bugs out of your outside garden, it's impossible!! and unnatural. Perhaps, you can control kids to out of your garden, though..?

Concrete it all over, surround it with a 10ft fence and than cover it with a plastic roof, ensure that there are now windows that can be opened and that it is hermetically sealed. You should now be safe from all your unwanted visitors.

Convert the garden to a sealed bunker. You could do this quite cheaply. Concrete perimeter posts, wooden frame, chipboard panelling.
